What Is a Tie Rod?

Tie RodThe tie rod is an important part of the steering system in your vehicle. It includes an inner and outer end and transmits force from the steering center link or rack gear to the steering knuckle. The rods push and pull the wheel to make it turn, letting you steer the car as you like.

Obviously, it’s virtually impossible to drive without turning the steering wheel, and we don’t recommend you try it! Maintain your tie rods well to keep your car in top driving condition.

What Are the Symptoms of a Bad Tie Rod?

Whenever your vehicle has a problem, it tends to let you know via warning signs. There are some signals you can watch for when it comes to your tie rod, too. If you notice any of these signs, you should make a service appointment as soon as possible with licensed professionals:

  • Clunky or Shaky Steering. When you turn the steering wheel, does there seem to be disconnect between it and the movement of the tires and wheels? Your tie rod may be at fault.
  • Uneven Tire Wear. If your tire tread is wearing faster along the inside or outside edges, it might be a sign that your wheel camber is incorrect.
  • Squeaks While Turning. If you hear a high-pitched squeal as you turn your car, your tie rod may be worn and need a replacement.

Can You Drive with a Bad Tie Rod?

Tie RodWhen you suspect you have a bad tie rod, we recommend that you drive as little as possible until you’ve had your tie rod inspected by trained professionals. Worn tie rods lead to the symptoms we touched on above, from shaky wheels and misaligned tires to imprecise steering.

While these problems are worth addressing, leaving worn tie rods unattended can lead to worse issues. If the tie rod breaks, you’ll experience an instant loss of steering. The faster your vehicle is moving, the more you’ll be at risk of an accident on the roads.
